Character Name: Spike/(William "The Bloody" Pratt)
Age: ~126-ish or so.
Canon: Buffy: the Vampire Slayer/Angel
Canon Point: Between Season 5 and Season 6 of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer.
Character History: Here is a wiki link.
Canon Abilities: Spike has many of the
standard "Vampire" Abilities. He is immortal, can regenerate damage, possesses superhuman physical attributes, and has heightened senses, able to track people by scent alone. He is also vulnerable to holy items and sunlight, can be killed by decapitation and a stake to the heart, needs to regularly ingest mammal blood to maintain his vitality, and can not enter the residence of a living human without being invited by a resident. Due to his age, he's stronger than many other vamps (able to flip a car easily), drain people quickly and hide the bodies without alerting others, survive a bomb explosion (this has not happened yet at his canon point, but is canon), and regenerate a spinal injury quickly. He is also more resistant to holy items and sunlight than most vampires. He also has a high tolerance for Alcohol.
Spike is very
skilled in combat either armed or unarmed, and loves a good brawl and fight.
Spike also is quite
smart and insightful, being especially perceptive and observant about people and relationships. (At least as long as they don't concern him.) This allows him to use some psychological weapons against people by exploiting their insecurities and tensions to divide and conquer for example. His analytical skills come in handy in combat too, and while he's capable of sound battle strategy, he's often impatient, preferring an outright attack. When it's worth it to him though, he can be
very patient. He often surprises people with how intelligent he actually is.
He has a fairly good
depth of knowledge and
awareness of other supernatural beings, specifically as they relate to Demons usually. (Fae are a bit outside of his usual wheelhouse, but he's not unaware of them, for example.)
Spike is
fairly up-to-date (for 2001) with technology, compared to most vampires. He possesses some basic skill and familiarity with computers, cable tv, and so on. He's also skilled with
operating various motor vehicles. He has also displayed skill in
picking-locks, pick-pocketing, and hot-wiring cars. Lastly, besides his Native English, Spike is
proficient in Latin, Luganda, and Fyarl. (Those latter two are languages of two demonic races.)
Inventory: Long leather coat (taken from the second slayer, Nikki Wood, that he killed. Worn almost as a second skin and is one of his trademarks.) Combat boots, black jeans, black tee shirt. Carton of Cigarettes. Lighter.
🦋 Personality
Option 1: Keep the word count to 150-400 per question. (CW: Death mentions, Stalking, Obsession, mentions of Violence, Vampires)
- Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
Overall, Spike is pretty neutral when it comes to magic. In his life, he was a poet, so even if he didn't believe in magic directly, he wanted the possibility of it being real. Drusilla, when she first meets him, in tears from his rejection by Cecily, approaches him and tells him that "You walk in worlds others can only imagine" and William is surprised but agrees. Drusilla makes him a vampire, so after that Spike/William most CERTAINLY believes in magic.
Over his 'unlife', he's shown a good depth and breadth of knowledge about the supernatural and supernatural-adjacent, from different types of demons to magical artifacts to knowing a few basic spells in theory if not practice. He's proficient in Latin as well as Fyarl and Luganda (two demonic languages), and this familiarity and knowledge comes in handy once he starts fighting (albeit reluctantly) on the good guys’ side. When he is on the good guys’ side and Giles is experiencing blindness due to a spell gone awry, Spike is the one who immediately suggests a basic reversal spell and starts looking through the tomes for it.
He's not primarily a magic user himself, often finding no need for it, but he's not opposed to using it if he feels it’s necessary. Such as when he has Willow (under protest) do a spell for him to make Drusilla love him again. Or when he's searching for, then uses, the Gem of Amara which is supposed to make vampires invulnerable. He also knows magic can be dangerous, being reluctant to let Giles perform a spell on him when the man is unsure he has it correct. Or when Dawn is determined to cast a spell to resurrect her mother--he helps. He first advises her against it, recognizing instantly why she's getting grave dirt. But when she's determined anyway, he assists her in getting more ingredients and talking to another sorcerer. Mostly, Spike seems to view magic as a tool he can pick up or put down as needed, as well as just a part of the larger world and existence.
- What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?
"Darkness at the Heart of My Love" by Ghost. Its themes allude to what has driven and still drives Spike. Every verse is a form of poetry that reflects what he was in his life as a poet (albeit a bloody awful one). He has always wanted to be loved, as he has loved fiercely. The dark and the light of it, as he and Dru are hardly good people. They’re soulless evil vampires, and yet they love each other in a genuine way for most of his existence. The overt themes of the song would speak to his being set free by becoming a vampire, turned by Drusilla.
Yet the song also speaks of when the summer dies, in what is an ironically poetic allusion to his ultimately coming to love Buffy Summers. Drusilla is a seer, and it’s heavily implied she had seen that Spike would ultimately come to love her, which is why she kept breaking up with him. Throughout the time when he and Buffy are thorns in each other’s sides, there is still a connection between them that is a form of dark chemistry. Initially, his own love for the Slayer manifests as obsession, including stalking and extreme frustration when she will not return his affections. Frustration enough to want to kill her, and yet he does not when he finds her in distress. Over S5 he will go from reluctant ally of the scooby gang, to actual ally and guardian of Buffy’s younger sister Dawn, because of his love for Buffy. Spike is someone who loves aggressively and passionately and loyally, even with no soul.
Further out from his current canon point, he’ll go on to continue to protect Dawn and help the scoobies and be struck by Buffy’s resurrection. His love for her, and her returning the affection if not the love, drives him to dark places in S6. Yet in S7, Buffy comes to trust him more than anyone else and treat him as her greatest ally. And he still loves her, knowing she’ll never return it. Ultimately, he’ll set Buffy (and everyone) free through his love for her, by sacrificing himself to close the Sunnydale Hellmouth for good.
- If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
Spike has already followed one person, Drusilla, to another realm, as she was his wife and made him a vampire. She also helped make him who he is, as they stayed together as lovers for over a century. He talks about how he'd never felt so alive until he was dead. He would do anything for Drusilla, including help prevent the world being sucked into Hell by allying with Buffy, the current Slayer. He helps in exchange for safe passage for himself and Dru out of Sunnydale. Later on, Drusilla dumps him and he returns to Sunnydale and coerces Willow to attempt a spell to make Dru love him again. It doesn't work (stopped before casting), but he is cheered up and resolves to just go torture her until she loves him again. They make up, then they break up again, and Spike returns to Sunnydale where he'll become a constant in Buffy Summers' life.
Now, however, I feel Spike would follow Buffy anywhere. During their time as enemies, there is undeniable chemistry and sparks, though they loathe each other. They work together fairly instinctively when forced to, even as they are constant thorns in each other's sides. A spell gone awry in S4 even has them planning to get married and in love, though they don't like each other.
Further, in S5 Spike comes to a disturbing realization that he loves Buffy. This does not please him, but manifests as an obsession at first, with stalking. However, in one episode, Spike captures Drusilla and offers to STAKE her, to prove his love for Buffy. Further, at one point in his frustration, he decides to finally kill Buffy--and stops, coming to sit by her in comfort when she's crying and worried for her mother. He is also kidnapped and tortured for information by the character Glory for information but he holds out defiantly because he knows it would hurt Buffy otherwise. He promised Buffy that he would protect her sister Dawn, or else I believe he would try to follow Buffy when she sacrificed herself. He is visibly crying when she dies, and struck in S6 when she is back. Eventually he even goes on to regain his soul from love for her.
- What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
Love, expressed through passion and loyalty intertwined. William’s life, and Spike’s whole existence, has been shaped by love. While alive, he was a poet attemping to court a woman through his poems (which were bloody awful). When she turns him down, and he is lost and, wandering, Drusilla comes to him and offers him a new life, where he’ll be free to express himself. Further, he lived with his sick mother, and his first act as a vampire is to sire her to help her suffer no more. Even without a soul, what is that but an act of love and loyalty? He stays by Drusilla’s side as lover and protector from when he’s turned until recently. He’s only about 126ish, but he is with her for a century as they travel the world, truly living. He mentions how he never truly felt alive until he was dead.
Even once he and Drusilla are broken up, he’s still sentimental for what they had, as she helped make him who he is. Doesn’t mean he’s not willing to stake her to prove his love for Buffy. His loyalty and love for Buffy are expressed elsewhere, so let’s talk about the character, Harmony. Spike never loves Harmony, but he does date her for convenience. They break up, but when Harmony believes Buffy is out to kill her, she goes to Spike to hide. He does not give her up to Buffy. While he holds nothing towards her beyond convenience, he still displays light loyalty to Harmony.
Passion—Spike shows passion in everything he does in loving his un-life. He regularly helps prevent the world from being destroyed because of how much he enjoys the world existing ("Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals on legs”, for example.) He loves to brawl and fight, and when he is chipped in S4 (neutered from violence against humans)—he’s devastated until he finds he can hurt non-living things (like demons). We see him regularly loses fights but he seems to be having a hell of a time anyway, because of his passion. In a flashback fighting a Slayer, they’re trading blows and she shoves his head through a subway window—and Spike just yells out in defiant joy. Spike is passionate and lets himself feel it throughout his un-life. Win or lose, good or bad, in pain or not, he is passionate about it all and expresses it constantly in his actions and movements and being.
