About Vampires in the Buffyverse Canon: Commonalities: They drink blood. Mingling their blood with a victim creates a new vampire. They burn in daylight. Holy Water and other Christianity based weapons hurt but don't destroy. Fire works. Stake through the heart works real well. Especially vulnerable to wood. They don't require oxygen to breathe, they don't generate life-force, do have minimal blood flow, and dislike garlic. They do require an invitation to enter a private dwelling.

Here's the big difference: Vampires in the Buffyverse are a hybrid of human and demon. They're considered half-breeds. Unnatural. Looked down on. They lack a 'soul'; basically the human dies, and a 'demon' takes up residence in their body, retains their memories and core personality traits, and lacks inhibitions. They can not have their mind read, they do not give off 'life-energy', they are considered impure (energy-wise), and are useless for purposes of 'brain-sucking' of energy.

When ready to bite, they will often shift to their 'game face'. Their brows become more pronounced and protrude a bit, their eyes turn yellow, they have nasty fangs. Here, have an example.

Hi, William the Bloody, aka Spike, is a vampire. And not one of the happy fun shiny ones. There will be language. There will be cheekiness and snark and attitude. There will be irrelevance and taking the piss out of things. There will be violence. Please feel free to talk to me about any and all of the above. I'm not looking to have him kick puppies (and honestly if you're kicking puppies for no reason he might just kick you), but he's definitely an antagonistic punk.

Spike listens, and lets Maurice get it all out. He doesn't respond right away either. "You know they were intentionally goading you at one point, right? Trying to get a rise out of you? Don't play their game." But there was no scold in the elder vamp's voice other than his usual attitude.

"You are possibly the youngest vampire here. I'm not sure how old Odette is. I can't say if it's true for other vamps, but where I'm from? We only get stronger with age. So you don't get any advantage that way." Again, laying it out clearly. "So you learn. You fight smart. That's what good you are. Not all battles are won with outright overpowering, remember?"

[toothaches]

The fledgling's furrowed brows start to soften. Right. Punch from the hips. He draws in a breath and shuts his eyes before letting it flow out of his nose.

"Right...God damn it, Spike, I'm just so sick of being so scared all the time. If it's not these damn fairies watching me shower, it's other vampires making us into something to be exterminated all over again!"

"Well, that's the other way you get not scared, kid." Spike was glad Maurice wasn't going to argue about this. He's trying to be a responsible adult here. It's not his strong point; usually he's too impatient for it.

"You learn. You use your brain, not just your muscles. Knowledge is power. Cliche and trite, but it's true."

[toothaches]

"Spike..." Maurice puts his mug down and dares to reach out and put both hands on either of Spike's shoulders. He gives him the tiniest of shakes. "Spike, I am not smart. You know it! I know it! I punch things! I don't know if I can do this!"

He's fine.

Spike is still in that relaxed yet passively alert state so Maurice actually can shake him slightly.

"Maurice, do you trust me?" He just asks, just as calm as he has been. He puts his mug down on the counter too and crosses his arms.

[toothaches]

Spike's unshaken calmness in the storm of the fledgling's emotions is what slowly gets him to calm down. At least for the moment. Slowly, he takes his hands off his mentor and opts for running them through his hair.

Did he trust Spike? Well...so far, the other vampire had only wanted good for him. Again and again. It would be stupid and...frankly, unkind to not trust Spike now. He presses his palms into his eyes.

"Yessss...."

"Then do you think I'd waste my time and effort if I didn't think you could learn?" With a derisive snort at the end. And yes, there's sarcasm. But there's truth too.

"So what's really eating you about all of this? I'm already planning to keep an eye on things."

[toothaches]

Maurice drags his hands down his face and parts his fingers so he can look at Spike.

"The whole control thing really freaks me out...you know? I mean. If I'm gonna do stupid shit, at least it's me doing the stupid shit...and you don't feel watched? All the time? Every damn day? And then someone was talking like--the fairies were gonna use us as broodmares or someshit? My parents have horses, Spike, do you know what a broodmare is?"

He is STILL wound up about that.

Spike blinks at Maurice and cants his head slightly. "This person going on about the fae, they wouldn't happen to have a User Name where they're the fucking boss, would they?" Because Spike had caught a glimpse of that and just ignored it.

"Look, Maurice. I've a low tolerance for idiots, so don't go turning out to be one now." Again with that base attitude, but no added sarcasm or snark. "I don't feel watched, and even if I did, I don't care. So the bloody fae are voyeurs. So what? They can't be watching all the damn time. But they sure can want you to think they are, as a way to do exactly this. Make you afraid. Control you. It's classic manipulation." Picking up his mug of blood again and taking another drink.

"No one's gonna ghoul you. Rules might be different for vampires where you're from anyways. Again, it's manipulation. Making you jumpy and do stupid shit because you're scared and not thinking." A pause to make sure Maurice was listening still.

"I know what a broodmare is. I'm pretty sure that asshole was speaking based on their own experiences and shit. They don't know what the fae are going to do with us anymore than anyone else. Problem is, we don't know what the fae want with us. But again--it comes back down to fear. You are letting your fear be used to manipulate you. To make you stupid."

Another sip from his mug.

"So if you're going to be stupid, then stop wasting my fucking time."

[toothaches]

Maurice slowly lowers his hands. He picks up his mug again to give them something to do. While he may not look at Spike, he does listen. And he remembers a time when it was his shadow the little flute players kept an eye out for.

He doesn't want to be stupid. He wants so badly to be chill and normal. Well, normal was a lofty goal. He'll go with chill. He wants to be chill. And if being smart...will get him that, then he is going to study.

"I can't promise I won't mess up, but God I'm tryin'."

"Everybody messes up, kid. I've more than bollocks'd up my share of things. If you survive it, you learn better. That's how you continue to survive." Spike said as calmly as he'd said almost everything so far. "You didn't ask for any of this, and it's not fair. But it's what you have to deal with now. So make the most of it."

[toothaches]

"Yeah..." Maurice is sober in that moment. He internally commits. It was going to be hard as fuck, but if it meant going to sleep and not feeling like something was laying next to him in bed, he'd do it. He might cuss the whole time, but he'll do it.

His nose wrinkles and he lets out a little chuff of a laugh.

"Sorry...just, you said bollocks and that's so fuckin' funny to me."

"I'm English. What did you expect?" Spike retorted, raising an eyebrow again. "What, you want me to try and sound differently? Maybe more American?" A snort.

"No sir. Not for me. I'm just tryin to get along 'ere the same as anyone." Spike drawled, imitating an American accent. A bit more southern than Riley's, but he was taking inspiration from soldier boy all the same.

[toothaches]

"No, it's fine, it's--"

Now Spike is speaking the language of his people and Maurice can't help it; he starts laughing.

"--I've only heard English people on TV when they were supposed to be bein' fancy, so you're like...I murder people but also I'm so proper."

[sod_off]

"Proper, and I, do not get along." Spike retorted, scowling at the other. He'd been proper before, in his human life. It had gotten him nowhere. He was much more suited to the life he'd built and made for himself. "Least you're not moping yourself into a ball of witless fear anymore."

[toothaches]

Maurice stops laughing. He doesn't take it to heart though. He knows Spike could be a lot meaner if he wanted to be.

He sighs a little and shakes his head. From the outside, he really must look pitiful. Maurice takes another drink and speaks into his mug. "Y'know, I wasn't always such a mess. This aint me."

Spike could indeed be a lot meaner if he wanted. He was TRYING to be better though, lately. He had his reasons. Besides that he'd somewhat taken on responsibility for Maurice now.

"You wanna spill your life story?" They had time. Spike took another drink from his mug of blood.
